FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

William Travis Lau, M.D.
Was born on August 18, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii to William K.K. and Esther F. Lau. He was a graduate of Iolani School ('98) and Tufts University. After completing both medical school and residency at Tufts, he continued his training as a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellow at The Cleveland Clinic. On his return to Honolulu in 2011, he joined Pacific Anesthesiology Services. He was a dedicated physician serving on numerous quality committees and setting national standards for blood usage in open heart surgery while advocating for patient safety-first policies. He also invented and is developing a safety suturing device which will help prevent needle stick injuries. He enjoyed ocean sports, tennis, golf, and running. He was training for the Huntington Beach Marathon when his life was tragically taken on January 28, 2019. This past December, he finally reached his goal of a sub 3:30 time at the Honolulu Marathon. During his time at Tufts, he also ran the Boston Marathon several times. He is survived by his wife Melissa, mother Esther, father William K.K., sister Emily and grandmother Beatrice. A non-alcoholic celebration of life will be held on February 9. Private burial. No flowers or leis. A foundation in his name is being created.
