Violet Ku’ulei (Palama) Ihara
Violet Ku'ulei (Palama) IharaViolet Ku'ulei Ihara, passed away on January 3, 2019 at the age of 94. Born on July 30, 1924, in Koloa, Kaua'i, she was the eldest child of Philip Kaua'iiki Palama and Hisako Komaki Palama. A retired State of Hawai'i Department of Education teacher at the Bishop Museum, she was also active with the Hawai'i State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. She had a long association with the Polynesian voyaging canoes, Hokule'a and Hikianalia, developing curriculum for school children. Preceded in death by husband, Dr. Teruo Ihara, she is survived by son, Michael; daughters, Miriam "Lei" Tocman (Howard) and Carol Lum (Matthew); granddaughters, Makana Reilly (James), Mele Ihara Lynn (Jeff), and Noe Lum; and two great-granddaughters, Lelehune Reilly and La'iku Reilly. Ku'ulei's celebration will be at Waiwai Collective, 1100 University Avenue (the Varsity Building, ground floor). Visitation 10:00, celebration 11:00; Sunday, February 17, 2019. Waiwai Collective is a footwear-free space. Please be prepared to remove your footwear at the door. Casual/aloha attire. No flowers. Lei are welcome. Arrangements Provided By: Hosoi Garden Mortuary
