David James Porteus
Surrounded by his children and grand- children, David James Porteus (81) passed away peacefully in the afternoon of February 13th. He was born at Kapiolani Medical Center in 1937 and spent his childhood in Manoa, within walking distance to Punahou School. After graduating from Punahou and Claremont Men's College, David joined the Army and served three years before returning home to Honolulu. He married Karen Osberg, a friend at Punahou, and they raised three children on the marina in Hawaii Kai. In his spare time, David enjoyed all aspects of volleyball, fishing and scuba diving. He was an active member of Lanikai Volleyball for over 50 years. He also enjoyed playing with Outrigger Canoe Club and often traveled with teammates to play in tournaments. Happiness for him was with friends looking out into the ocean holding a beverage in one hand and top notch sashimi in the other. He is survived by his children, Diane Sutherland, Ginny Velci, and David Stanley (Stacy); granddaughters, Lindsay, Emmalia, and Anuhea; grandsons, Stanley and Bristow; siblings, Evan, Barbara, Anne, and Susan, and long-time partner Hoppy Smith. Private services will be held to celebrate his life at Lanikai and on the Kohala Coast. In memoriam, donations can be made in his name to Hui Aloha Kiholo via huialohakiholo.org or (P.O.
