FLORA CAMERON CRICHTONJanuary 12, 1925 ~ March 2, 2019 Flora Cameron Crichton died peacefully in San Antonio, Texas on March 2, 2019. She considered Honolulu a second home, and for more than five decades spent time in Hawaii with friends and family. She was a graduate of Sweet Briar College, President and CEO of the Flora Cameron Foundation, and a woman known for her beauty, intellect, and philanthropic spirit. Her gifts to education and the arts include two university lecture series; the largest mosaic mural in the United States, commissioned for San Antonio's world's fair; and major gifts to her alma mater. She served on numerous boards, including the East-West Center in Honolulu; the School of American Research and the Georgia O'Keefe Museum, both in Santa Fe, NM; Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia; Trinity University; the San Antonio Art Institute and Hemisfair Executive Committee, all in San Antonio, Texas. She became an active member of the Republican Party in 1948---the first time she voted---and she served as Vice Chairman of the Texas Republican Party (1958-1960), Delegate to the Republican National Conventions (1960 and 1964), Alternate Delegate to the Republican National Conventions (1968), Member of the Republican National Finance Committee (1965), Member of the President's Mission to Latin America, headed by Governor Nelson Rockefeller (1969), United States Member of the Inter-American Commission on Women (OAS, 1969-1972), Consultant to the Department of State's Bureau of Inter-American Affairs (1972-1975), and Vice Chairman of the National Finance Committee for President George H.W. Bush (1988). She is preceded in death by her parents, William Waldo Cameron and Helen Miller Cameron; her stepfather, Bishop Everett Jones; husband, John H. Crichton; son, Ike Simpson Kampmann III; daughter, Helen Miller Kampmann; and stepsons, Stevenson and Holt Atherton. She is survived by her daughter Megan Kampmann Finch; stepchildren, Geary Atherton (Catherine), Kate Crichton Gubelmann (Jimmy), Bunnie Crichton, Lili Crichton Monell (Ambrose), John Crichton, Jr. (Chantelle), eighteen grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and hundreds of special friends that span the globe, including Mary Emily and Jimmy Greenwell of Honolulu.
