FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Carol Sumie Nunotani Yamamoto
88, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was born on March 18, 1930 in Hawi. She graduated from Lana'i High School (Class of 1948) and the University of Hawai'i (Class of 1952). She had been a teacher with the Department of Education, and her last position was at Ma'ema'e Elementary School. She retired in 1989. She was active in the Honpa Hongwanji Buddhist Women's Association, also serving as Federation President from 2004-2007, during which Hawai'i hosted the Buddhist Women's World Convention (2006). She was also involved with Project Dana including being part of the Project Dana Dancers. She was a Rhythm and Life instructor for several years and still assisted with classes. Carol lived a vibrant, active and independent life. She was also known for her intricate and magical handmade creations that included favors for parties and events, sewn objects, and ornate paper sculptures. She enjoyed rich friendships, and was a loving and supportive presence in her family. She had a strong, smart, calm and sensible manner that we remember in our hearts. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Iwao and sister Elaine Miyakawa. She is survived by daughter Lynne (Lucretia Knapp), sons Ryan (Jann Nagato) and Reid (Maxine); grandchildren Zane, Aisha, Logan and Alize; sisters Maisie Nagaishi and Shirley Smith; nieces and nephews. Visitation 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin. Service at 3 p.m. Casual attire. Arrangements Provided By: Hosoi Garden Mortuary
