(69) of Honolulu, retired school counselor for King Intermediate School, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2019. She is survived by her brother, Burt S., kokua-companion, Dennis K. Asato, and preceded in death by her parents, Rusty Seishiro and Alice Satsuki (Kawazoe) Nakagawa. Graduated from McKinley High School, '67, she obtained a BA degree in psychology at University of Hawaii (UH), a MA degree at New York University in Education, and obtained a 5-year Special Ed certificate at UH. Val later obtained a MA degree in Education at UH in Counseling and Guidance. To enhance her career, she took graduate courses at the University of Washington. Besides working with disadvantaged students, Val was interested in Bonsai, grew other plants, performed the hula in her youth, pursued taiko drumming, attended operas and plays. Val enjoyed watching UH Wahines volleyball, loved traveling, and constantly exercised at a gym. Services will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Hosoi Garden Mortuary 1 p.m.; visitation 12 noon.
