99, died on April 21, 2019. He was born and raised in Hilo and graduated from Hilo High School, Class of 1938. Chester served in WWII as a member of the 232nd Combat Engineer Company of the celebrated 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He fought in Italy, France, and Germany and participated in the liberation of the French town of Bruyeres. In 2015, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor medal for his war time service. Upon returning to Hawaii, Chester's job as a building inspector led to a career in carpentry and the establishment of his own general contracting business in the early 1960s. He was a ballroom dance instructor for Hawaii Dance Assn., an avid fisherman, and bowler. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Doris Haruko (Oya) Murai; children Dr. Daniel Murai (Amy Stone Murai), Stephen Murai, Marsha Murai of Honolulu, and Christine Murai of Bellingham, WA; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; sister Yuriko (Murai) Fong of South Pasadena, CA; and several nephews and nieces.
