Marion Healani Heen Shim
Marion Healani Heen Shim, 94 of Honolulu, peacefully passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019, surrounded by family. She was born in Honolulu on November 16, 1924, to Ernest N. Heen and Jeanette K. Hanapi. She was the eldest daughter of nine siblings. Marion was born into a family of lawmakers, educators, jurists, and musicians, all of whom instilled in Marion a strong and enduring community conscience and deep sense of appreciation for public service, and a love of Hawaiian music. Marion was proud of her familial roots in the Democratic Party of Hawaii. In addition to raising seven children, her work and public service career included OHA Trustee Aide, Director of Laniakea YWCA, the first Executive Secretary of the Commission on the Status of Women, Executive Director of Moanalua Gardens Foundation, Courtroom Clerk of the First Circuit Court, Volunteer Chair of Alu Like Oahu Island Center, Vice President of the YWCA Western Region, Vice President of the Oahu YWCA Board of Directors, Facilitator and Organization Consultant of the Legal Aid Society, and Director of the HGEA Board of Directors. She is survived by her brother Walter Heen, children Liko Martin, Neumann Shim, Dari Matsuura, Dana Palama, Pono Shim, Sy Shim, 30 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Marion was predeceased by her son, Sri, and siblings Francis "Buddy" Heen, Abraham, George "Papanui", Harvey, Ernest "Juggie", Claire Cameron and Robert.
