Marie Moriarty Ridley
Age: 100, Born in San Francisco on May 12, 1918. Died peacefully on May 11, 2019 at home in Honolulu. Marie was unusual for her time-smart, beautiful and independent. Marie arrived in Honolulu at a very young age. She began her education at Ali`iolani Elementary in Kaimuki and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1936. After graduation, she went on to work at the Hawaiian Pineapple Company as a secretary. While commuting to and from her hob at Hawaiian Pineapple, she was noticed by one of the local boys working as a civilian engineer at Pearl Harbor. They soon met and shortly thereafter, she began seeing Clyde B. Ridley and a great love story was born. Married in July, 1940 Marie and Clyde initially established a home in Kaimuki overlooking downtown Honolulu and settled into their first year of marriage. One Sunday morning early in their second year together, Marie notices a fleet of aircraft baring "red circles" on their tails and wings flying over their home. It was December 7, 1941. Clyde raced to work at Pearl Harbor where he was unable to contact his new bride for several weeks. Once the war was over, their son, Norman arrived. Clyde and Marie designed and built a home in Aina Haina in 1949 where Marie lived until her passing. In the '50s, they were the consummate entertainers for family, local and high school friends and numerous friends from Pearl Harbor during the war years. Marie and Clyde enjoyed ocean swimming after work and on weekends at the Uluniu Women's Swimming Club at Waikiki Beach where Marie was a member. They also enjoyed dancing together whenever and wherever the mood struck. When staying out in the country at Hauula, Marie also turned out to be a great shot with a rifle, besting family and friends on several occasions. Marie is survived by her son, Norman, three Grandchildren - Jason, Lisa and Nicole and two Great-Grandchildren - Jake and Everly. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile Egyptian Temple No.33, Honolulu Hawaii. Marie was fiercely independent in her lifestyle right up until six weeks before her passing-and she would not have wanted it any other way. While sorrowful to watch her pass, it was an honor to see her off, with dignity and love, in the home she loved for so many years and with the evening's song birds and the valley's breezes in attendance. Marie was a loving Spouse, a wonderful Mother and a Friend to those who knew her. Marie M. Ridley will be missed. Funeral Service for Marie will be held on Friday June 21, 2019 at Diamond Head Mortuary. Visitation 10:00 am and Service to begin at 11:00 am.
