Kikue Fujita
95, died on May 11, 2019. Born Dec. 6, 1923, to Heishiro and Kiku Tomonaga, Issei sugarcane farmers in Kaumana. A 1940 Hilo High graduate, she worked at the Japanese language paper, Kazan; Bank of Hawaii; and the Hilo Tribune Herald, where a co-worker introduced Kikue to her brother, George S. Fujita. George and Kikue married in 1949, soon relocating to Honolulu, then settling the family in Kaneohe in 1963. Kikue worked briefly at S. H. Kress, but was primarily a homemaker. She was a skilled seamstress, loved gardening, and made the best short ribs and fried chicken. She liked puzzles (crossword and jigsaw), the Stylistics, and barbecues at Magic Island. After George retired from a lifelong career at Gasco, they enjoyed traveling around the world. Favorite destination: Las Vegas, every Mother's Day. Preceded in death by husband, George; and siblings, Sunao, Tadashi, Tsunako Nishiguchi, Matsuko Fong, Haruko Shinozuka, Chiyoko Wada, and Mutsue Kimata. She is survived by her children: Randall (Susan), Gayle (Takao) Sato, Carl (Beryl Yanagi- Fujita), and Beverly (Carlos da Silva II) da Silva; grandchildren: Toni (Alan) Tran, Nicholas Fujita, Rachel Fujita, Kota Sato, and Giada da Silva.
