Lee Summers Wild passed away peacefully on July 19, 2019. She was born on August 28, 1943 in Honolulu, to Catherine Cooke Summers and Richard Leroy Summers. Lee was raised in Kailua and on Moloka'i and was a 1961 graduate of Punahou School and a 1965 graduate of Kalamzoo College, where she met her husband of 53 years. She was deeply involved with non-profit work, fostering her love of Hawaiian history and cultural resources through her work with the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society (HMCS). A descendant of the Cooke and Rice families, Lee's work in maintaining the records and genealogies of the Missionary family descendants continues to assist generations of families to learn about their family histories. It was through the museum's collections and exhibits that she developed a love for the art of Hawaiian Quilting. She soon became a respected resource for the history and cultural significance of kapa kuiki and was a founder of the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project, reaching out to communities throughout the islands to document hundreds of the patterns and stories behind these cultural treasures. Upon her retirement from HMCS, Lee devoted her time to serve the Daughters of Hawai'i (as Regent in 2001), perpetuating the importance of historical preservation of two of Hawai'i's palaces, Hanaiaakamlama and Hulihe'e. Her dedication to supporting the community of her home state included service with the Cooke Foundation, and active dedication to her church for over 50 years. Lee embraced all she met with her warm sense of humor and aloha. She is survived by her husband Gary, son Rick Wild (Kristie), daughter Tracy Alexander (Jonathan), grandchildren Parker and Tanner Wild, Lily and Jack Alexander, and sisters Dale Bachman, Linda Strong, and Molly Summers. A celebration of life for Lee will be held 11 a.m. August 31 at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 780 Keolu Drive in Kailua, followed by a reception.
