Herman M. Sumida
85 years old, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, with his family at his side. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and grew up during WWII in Hiroshima, Japan where he survived the horrors and aftermath of the atomic bombing. Upon returning to Hawaii, he worked as a carpenter before retiring from the State of Hawaii, DAGS. Herman was friendly, good-natured, and happy-go-lucky. He is survived by his beloved wife, Pauline, daughter Kim, son Shane, sister-in-law Yaeko Jane Sumida, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Saburo and Kaneyo, brothers Hiroyoshi & Shigeo (Yaeko), and sister Hatsuko. The family would like to express their appreciation to the caring staff, administration, ohana, and Drs. Gries & Kuhn at Hale Malamalama, the professionals and volunteers of Bristol Hospice, and Dr. Ronald O. Lee for caring for Herman most of his life. Private memorial and inurnment services were held.
