Shirley Mallery Lum
Shirley Mallery Lum8/12/1933 - 8/13/2019 Shirley Lum of Hawai'i Kai, was born in Canton, Illinois to Richard and Irma Mallery. She passed away at home on August 13, 2019 at 86 years and a day old. Shirley was a graduate of Manual High School in Peoria, Illinois. She moved to Hawai'i in 1960 and worked as a secretary at the Newspaper Guild where she met her husband Tom, married in 1962 and adopted two children from the Queen Lili'uokalani Center for Hawaiian children. Her most important job was "Mom". Shirley was among a core group of individuals that formed the "Friends of Queen's Beach" and the "Save Sandy Beach Coalition" in the 1980s working to preserve open space along the Ka'iwi coastline. Succeeding in doing so was one of her prized accomplishments. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Thomas W.O. Lum and son Anthony "Tony" Lum, brother Stanley Mallery and nephew Patrick Mallery. She is survived by daughter Malia Marquez, son-in-law Adrian Marquez, and granddaughters Tiana and Teani Marquez. She is also survived by sister-in-law Mary Mallery (Stanley), nieces Helen Bloom and Kathy Hornback (Harry), and many grand nieces and nephews. Services: Kilohana United Methodist Church Saturday, September 14, 2019. 9:30 am visitation; 10:30 am service. Lunch to follow. Casual attire, flowers and lei welcome.
