DR. KWONG YEN LUM
Dr. Kwong Yen Lum, best known as KY, was born in Honolulu November 14, 1926. First son of Ko Fong Lum and Yun Tsin Chong Lum, he spent his early years in New York and then Shanghai before returning to Honolulu. He entered Punahou in the 4th grade and graduated in 1945, and then enlisted in the Army during the final days of WWII. After his stint in the service he continued his studies, first at Colgate University then at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he earned his Doctorate of Medicine. It was during this time he met and married Dorothy "Dee" Wells. Following an internship at University of Washington in Seattle and then a Fellowship at Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, he and Dee returned to Honolulu in 1959 to live and raise their growing family. In his professional life he served as staff psychiatrist for State of Hawaii Department of Health, taught as Clinical Professor for the John A. Burns School of Medicine, served as Trustee for Queens Medical Center and worked tirelessly in his private practice, which he continued full time until he was 80 and part time until his passing. KY enjoyed travel, good food, cooking, music and the arts, and in later years took up painting and writing. He was a lifelong avid reader and philosopher. Known for his warmth, wisdom and sensible view of life, he is most remembered for his love of family and friends. He is predeceased by his wife Dee. He is survived by his brother Kwong Hing Lum, children Mark (Kathy), Nancy (Peter) Fisher, Steven (Prince) and David, 3 grandchildren Taylor, Monica and Gregory, and countless family, friends and loved ones.
