JAYA LAKSHMI RAMULU POEPOE
JAYA LAKSHMI RAMULU POEPOEPassed away peacefully on August 11, 2019, at age 85. Jaya was born in London, England and grew up in southern India near Madras. Her Dad's family was in the cashew nut and cashew nut oil business. After her Dad's death in 1948 Jaya and her Mom moved to Oregon City, Oregon, to be with her Mom's family. Jaya graduated from Oregon City High School, attended Lewis & Clark College, and then moved to Boston and graduated from Simmons College. Jaya met Andrew Poepoe, a student at Yale University. They dated, fell in love, Jaya moved to Hawai'i, and in 1958 Jaya and Andrew were married in Atherton Chapel in Honolulu. Jaya was a librarian for the Territory of Hawai'i and then the State of Hawai'i. She worked on the bookmobile to take books to areas that did not have libraries, and she worked in the main library. Jaya became a full time mom to raise their two sons. She later worked as a volunteer in the Kailua public library. Jaya helped to promote the library program in featured articles with O. Vincent Esposito, Speaker of the Territorial House of Representatives, and with Mrs. Flora Hayes and Mrs. William Quinn. She enjoyed traveling with her husband in Europe and Asia, and they visited U. S. national parks. Jaya is survived by husband Andrew, sons Stephen and Alan (Jennifer), and grandchildren Isabella, Ethan, and Jack. A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, October 5, at Kaumakapili Church. No gifts to the family, please, gifts to Kaumakapili Church are fine.
