Joyce Etsuko Okino
Joyce Etsuko OkinoSeptember 22, 1943 ~ September 9, 2019 75, daughter of Kunio and Natsuko Higuchi, discovered her passions early in life, effectively shaping her personal development. Her love for mathematics and accounting was her special tool for personal growth, lifelong learning, and selfless generosity, impacting the lives of others over time. Joyce graduated from McKinley High School and the University of Hawaii School of Education and briefly taught secondary mathematics at Jarrett Intermediate School. With basic bookkeeping and accounting, Joyce helped the family business, Higuchi Enterprises (Holiday Mart, Fabrics & Notions Department). She then went to night school and obtained her Certified Public Accountant license. For many years, Joyce demonstrated her skills as a business manager for Oahu Community Correctional Center and the Halawa Correctional Facility. It was always her priority to mentor associates in continual growth, development and advancement. For 38 years, she served clients with income tax preparation at H&R Block. She valued education, modeled the pursuit of learning and performance excellence and encouraged her children and grandchildren to develop their potential. Joyce will be remembered for her professional achievements, caring mentorship, warm generosity, and deep love for precious family members, esteemed associates and cherished clients. Her family includes Glenn, her husband; daughters Lisa (Weldon) Haw of San Diego, CA and Lori (Matthew) Okino of Portland, OR; son Michael of Honolulu; seven grandchildren; three siblings, Janet Hironaka (Hiram) of San Pedro, CA; Hobart Higuchi (Bobbie) of San Jose, CA; and Joyce was preceded in death by Jenny Nakasone (George) of Honolulu. Joyce's warm, caring, and generous spirit lives on in treasured memories of a blessed, joyful life. Private services were held at Makiki Christian Church.
