Passed away peacefully after a long illness at Straub Hospital on Saturday, August 31, 2019 with her loving husband by her side. She was born to Walter E. Barbee and Earnestine R. Jackson in Seattle, Washington on April 23, 1947 and graduated from James A. Garfield High School in 1965. After a year of college at Western Washington State University, she went to work for a Seattle dentist until she was selected Miss Black Seattle at the age of 22. Her talent and beauty gained her attention and the opportunity to become a member of the national touring production of Hair. It was during one of their tour stops in the Pacific that the group landed in Honolulu and the city made such an impression on her that she decided to make it her home in 1970. Rose Marie was very active in performing on stage in local theatre and on the runway for many years to come. Her full-time job working for the law firm, Shigemura & Harakal, allowed her to make bi-weekly appearances on the runway of the Hala Terrace at the Kahala Hilton where she modeled local and international designs that were applauded by kama'aina and visitors alike. Rose also appeared in such productions as "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", "Time of Your Life", "Funny Girl", "Evita" and "Chicago" at DHT; "Dames at Sea" and "To Kill a Mockingbird" at MVT; "Gypsy" and "The Wiz" at ACT and "They're Playing Our Song" for the American Corporation of the Arts with Joanne Worley. In addition to, and often at the same time as her modeling and theatre performances, Rose also regularly sang the boogie-woogie music of the Andrews Sisters with her own musical Savoy Sisters, Shari Lynn and Annie Maclachian on local stages and on both the USS Constitution and USS Independence cruise ships. One of her greatest thrills was to actually meet the last surviving Andrews sister who was visiting Hawaii. Her additional musical experience and acting credits include singing back-up vocals for Israel Kamakawiwoole on his solo albumn Ka'Ano'i and appearances in Hawaii Five-O, Magnum P.I., Murder She Wrote and Goodbye Paradise (the movie). Rose Marie is survived by her husband of 26 years, James W. Brady, her two brothers, Walter "Buddy" Barbee and Richard Barbee, niece Terri Manning and nephews Shawn and Jeffery McCormick. The Celebration of Life will begin with visitation at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2019 at Hosoi Garden Mortuary; service at 6:00 p.m. Aloha attire. No flowers. A short inurnment service will be open to those who wish to attend at 11:30 a.m., October 15, 2019 the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
