George Shimabukuro, age 83, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at the Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu. He was born on March 20, 1936 in Hoolehua, Molokai to Kama and Kame (Nakamura) Shimabukuro. He was a 1954 graduate of Mid Pacific Institute. He married Frances Kuba of Honolulu. He served in the US Army from 1956 to 1962. When he was discharged, he started working as a plumber with Arita Plumbing. In 1976, he ventured on his own and started Akamai Plumbing, Inc. as the sole proprietor and employee. Over the years, he expanded his business to include multiple employees, and finally retired in 1999. George lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; actively participating in his sons' sports and extra-curricular activities, watching University of Hawaii sports and cooking and eating local food. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing baseball and tennis. Later in life he caught the golf bug and spent many weekends on the links with friends or practicing at home. Throughout his life he was an avid fisherman. He was also a skilled artist, creating original raku pottery in a homemade kiln. He had a generous soul that was more concerned about the welfare and happiness of others than himself. He is survived by sons David and Glen Shimabukuro, daughter in law Analisa Garganera Shimabukuro, stepson Jun Young Lee, sister Hatsue Hashimoto, brothers Henry and Ken Shimabukuro; and numerous nephews, nieces and in laws.
