Edward Ling Sung Jim, M.D. was born on September 26, 1929 in Wailuku, Maui, the son of Ah Kum and Ethel Jim, and died in Honolulu on October 15, 2019 at the age of 90. After attending the University of Hawaii, he followed the footsteps of his brothers Vernon and Robert, graduating from the University of Chicago School of Medicine in 1955. He then moved east to New York City to continue four years of his surgical training in head and neck surgery. Additional fellowship training followed at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center for Cancer. During this time, his training was interrupted by two years of service in the United States Air Force as captain in the Medical Corps. In 1963, Dr. Jim returned to Honolulu to start his private practice as a head and neck surgeon. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and senior member of the American Head and Neck Society. Locally, he was a past president of the Hawaiian Surgical Association and Emeritus Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine. During his career, he took pride in teaching his chief residents the principles of head and neck surgery. Dr. Jim was predeceased by his wife Mardie, a former head nurse of the open heart surgical unit at St. Vincent's Hospital, whom he met in Manhattan during his training. He is survived by his sons, Edward Emmet and Gregory Redmond. Dr. Jim loved traveling and during his outdoor leisure he loved taking care of his wife's rose garden.
