Passed away on October 7, 2019 after a brief illness. He was 96. Mr. Won was born on November 27, 1922 in Kaneohe, the second of six children. The family later settled in Hilo, where he graduated from Hilo High School. After graduation, Mr. Won was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving his country as an infantryman in the Second World War. He fought with the 99th Infantry "Checkerboard" Division, 395th Infantry Regiment, rising to the rank of sergeant and seeing combat action in Europe. After the war, Mr. Won earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Hawaii, and his Doctoral Degree in Sociology/ Anthropology from Michigan State University. He returned to the University of Hawaii Department of Sociology, where he taught for 26 years. Upon his retirement he was named Professor Emeritus. Mr. Won, and the love of his life, the late Irene Tomi Won raised three children. He will always be remembered as a loving father with an easy sense of humor, and a kind spirit. He is survived by his children Gregory, Georgianne, and Francine; two grandchildren Jared and Noelani; and two brothers, Yoon Ju and Yoon Ok.
