Gwendolyn Luella Denis Gomes was born on April 30, 1933, in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. She was the daughter of Matilda Frazier and Frank Andrew Denis of Pu'unui, Oahu. Gwen attended Ma`ema`e Elementary, Stevenson Middle and Roosevelt High School, where she graduated in 1951. Her husband, Sandy Gomes, also attended Roosevelt, graduating in 1949. They married at St. Stephens Church in Nuuanu and started their family of six children. She and Sandy were married 67 years. Settling in Kailua, Gwen ensured her children experienced the best. In their schools she immersed herself in PTAs, school boards, fund raising committees and as a classroom volunteer. Beyond her family, she involved herself in several political campaigns and helped many candidates obtain elected office. In their middle years, Gwen and Sandy grew their insurance business in downtown Honolulu, where they achieved tremendous success and respect, developed a great professional reputation and many friends. For years Gwen and Sandy enjoyed their membership at Oahu Country Club. Gwen loved the club's activities and especially looked forward to her many bridge games. With her nature being fun, friendly, and sociable, coupled with her very good sense of humor, Gwen and Sandy made life-long friends there. Gwen loved Hawaii's history, people, plants and flowers. She served as an Iolani Palace and Fosters Garden docent, and as a Queens Hospital volunteer. Gwen was a loyal and devoted person. Her home was warm, casually stylish, open, breezy and comfortable. She was an excellent cook and everyone especially looked forward to her "midnight soup" during the holidays. Later as a happy substitute to cooking, she became expert at making reservations - one of her favorite activities, she loved to say. After a full life of giving and surrounded by family, Gwen passed quietly at home on October 15, 2019. In addition to Sandy, she is survived by her children, Lee, Gwenette Higa, Scott (Janet), Jon (Pam), Joe (Laura), Sandra (Tadesse), grandchildren, Keoni Higa, Kelika Higa (Kira), Jamie Castleberry (Trey), Brett, Michael (Regan), Harrison "Koa" (Kara), Nicholas, Anna Gabriella Mireles, Emma and Hana Chekol, seven great-grandchildren, five siblings, and many nieces and nephews. Gwen was a beloved wife, mother, Tutu, daughter, sister, auntie and friend. She will always be remembered, loved and missed. Private Services.
