March 9, 1928 - November 11, 2019 Lani "Kui Lan" Chock Ai, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2019 at the age of 91. She is survived by her son, Steven (Pam Kimura); daughter, Carol Ai (Mike) May; grandsons, Andrew (Jessica) Killips and Evan (Christina) Killips; three great-grandchildren, Haley, Owen and Emi; sister Anna (Matthew) Chow and many nieces and nephews. Lani was born on March 9, 1928 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the ninth of ten children to Seu Chock and You Cha Ching. After graduating from Farrington High School, she worked at the Ross Sutherland men's clothing store and then for various travel agencies as a corporate travel agent. She also invested in residential real estate on Oahu. Most important to Lani were her family and friends, travel and art. She was conscientious about her health her entire life, exercised daily at the Honolulu Club, loved plants and raised a beautiful victory garden. But she was steadfast in her first priority being her children and grandchildren. Lani always made time for her family and even moved condos to be closer to her grandchildren's school so she could watch them in the afternoons. Her grandchildren fondly remember her preparing their favorite cinnamon toast, overfeeding Andrew with kiwi fruit, taking them to weekly firework shows and riding the trolley together. She loved to travel and visited so many places in the world, including Nome Alaska, Nepal, India and cities across the United States. Lani said "traveling is broadening" and imparted that on her children and grandchildren. Her family took that wisdom to heart and enjoyed multi-generational trips with her to Alaska, Australia, China, England, Russia, the Baltics and places in the U.S. and Canada. Lani was an optimistic person. She was sunny, smiley and infectious with her big, chatty personality and had many friends of all ages. Having grown up on a farm in Kalihi with her 9 siblings, she was feisty, resourceful, helpful, supportive and appreciated the simple things in life. Lani helped to run a Chinese painting studio during the 70's with a Chinese artist who taught her Sumi painting (black ink brush painting). It was there where she thrived in two areas that she loved -- business and art. Lani painted some of her finest paintings during that time. Other hobbies included mahjong, gardening, arts & crafts, cooking and exercising. Although not personally involved in the family business, Lani supported her children Steven and Carol in everything and in every way. Her steadfast belief in them never wavered and she proudly attended events that celebrated them and the City Mill team. Lani will be dearly missed and remembered fondly by many, but most of all by her loving family. The family would like to thank everyone who brought joy to her life and most recently, the staff at Kahala Nui for their dedicated care. A Celebration of Life will be held at Iolani School on Sunday, November 24, 2019. Visitation will begin at 2:30 pm on the Seto Hall Lanai with a service following at 4:00pm in St. Alban's Chapel. Parking is available in the Weinberg structure on Kamoku Street.
