After a five-year battle with a progressive neurological disease of unknown origin, Dr. Janice Friend died peacefully with her family at her side. Jan first received degrees in nursing, before deciding to study medicine. She completed her residency in psychiatry at Stanford University in 1985. After working at Hawaii State Hospital, Jan then practiced psychiatry, serving patients from all walks of life. She resided in Waimanalo for over 30 years. Dr. Friend is survived by her husband Don Shaw, her daughter Amanda Friend Shaw, PhD., and her mother Betty Friend, RN.
