FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Evelyn Michiko Kubota Oishi
Evelyn Michiko Kubota OishiEvelyn Oishi, whose two favorite words were "empathy" and "finesse," died on October 9 in Honolulu. She was 90. Her friends describe her as free and independent, a true inspiration and role model, amazingly insightful, a generous spirit, ahead of her time, always one of my favorites, her own woman, what a lady, a gem. With her family, she always "kept the door open," and shared highbrow and loving ideas to get you through life. She said she raised her children with "benign neglect," giving them space to grow with freedom and self-sufficiency. Evelyn Michiko Kubota was born on November 22, 1928 in Honolulu to Suyewo and Kimiko Kubota. She had a younger brother, the late Edwin Yutaka Kubota, and fond memories of growing up in Kakaako and attending McKinley High School. She adored local style culture, Saturday Night Live humor and the New York Times. She was a bibliophile, and made philosophical notes in the margins of books and magazine articles. She enjoyed gin, every day. She was a social worker, playground director and stay-at-home-Mom. She marched for the Equal Rights Amendment and was treasurer for the National Organization for Women. Evelyn is survived by her children, Emi Anamizu and her husband Phil, Ken David Oishi and his wife Kim Mack, and Andrew Oishi and his wife Laurie Tam; grandchildren, Nina, Molly, Max and Shanae Oishi; sister-in-law Dorothy Kubota; nieces Deanne Takushi and her husband Bert, and Sandi Zinnel; and grandnieces Lauren Takushi and Sierra Zinnel. In lieu of gifts, please consider a contribution to the Empathy Scholarship, that has been created for students at the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, where Evelyn earned her degrees. The University of Hawaii Foundation requests that contributions be made payable to "UH Foundation" with "Empathy Scholarship in Memory of Evelyn Michiko Kubota Oishi" on the memo line.
