Mary G.H. Tohyai
Mary G.H. TohyaiMary G.H. Tohyai, formerly Mary G.H. MacNeal, nee Leong, passed away on Tuesday, November 12th, 2019 in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the age of 94. She is survived by daughter, Nalani Clark (Philip) of New York & Maui; grandson, Jesse Abrams of New York and Maui; sister Mildred Nakano of Pleasanton, California; nieces, nephews, and their children. Born in Honolulu to Tin Yau Leong and Mew Kee Leong, she was third of six children. Her first paying "job" at age 11, was as file clerk at Maemae Elementary School's cafeteria. She was paid with a free (5-cent) lunch for each job done. She graduated from Roosevelt High School and during WWII, and became supervisor at the Honolulu Telephone Company. She worked 30 years with the Federal Government as executive secretary to Admirals and Generals at Pacific Command Headquarters at Camp Smith, including 6 years as executive secretary to the commanding general of the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group in Thailand during the Vietnam War. She is preceded in death by beloved siblings; brother Edward Leong, brother Franklin Leong, sister May Chang, and brother Walter Leong. She will be inurned at Diamond Head Memorial, private ceremony to follow. Donations to The Parkinson's Foundation at Parkinson.org are appreciated.
