Blanche Young Chong
Blanche Young ChongBlanche was loving and gracious with a warm smile. She was soft spoken, humble and a faithful servant, always willing to be involved and lend a helping hand. Born in Honolulu in 1927 to Kong Seong Young and Ah Mee Lum, Blanche was raised in Kaimuki. A graduate of Roosevelt High School Class of 1945, she successfully obtained an advanced degree at Armstrong Business College in Berkeley, California. Upon her return to Honolulu she began her career with the Territory of Hawaii as a Court Reporter at the District Court. Following that she worked as a secretary for the City and County of Honolulu in the Refuse Division. She finished her career as Secretary to the Chief Engineer in the Division of Public Works, City and County of Honolulu. Blanche retired in 1982 with 33 years of service. Blanche was married to Robert W. O. Chong, President of Wing Coffee Company for 46 years. Together, they raised two daughters. Robert, better known as "Coffee" to his friends, passed in 1995. Blanche enjoyed her retirement years by golfing with the Women of Waialae, playing mahjong and traveling with friends and family. She was an active member of Community Church of Honolulu and volunteered weekly in the church office for many years. Blanche was a loving and supportive grandmother regularly participating in their various activities. Her family has many cherished memories created during the trips and cruises she took them on. A charter resident of Kahala Nui Senior Living Community, Blanche moved in when it first opened in 2005. There, she enjoyed 14 years of independent living, participating in the social and wellness programs, fitness classes, excursions and developed many wonderful friendships. She passed peacefully at Hi'olani Care Center at Kahala Nui on November 8, 2019 at the age of 92. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Diane Chong and grandchildren, Steven Zane and Matthew Zane( Julie) great grandson, Adam Zane; daughter Liane Chong Takara (John), grandchildren Jonathan and Christine Takara; sister, Phyllis Seto, niece, Susan Donlon (Tim) and her children, Elliott, Erica Durante( Leo), and Hugh Donlon. Her family extends gratitude to all who knew her for enriching her life. A private memorial and burial will be held. A Celebration of Blanche's Life will take place on Monday, December 30 at Waialae Country Club from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Donations may be made to St. Francis Hospice.
