Louise Solmssen Griggs
LOUISE SOLMSSEN GRIGGS Born on October 6, 1935, to Ruth and Rumsey McGregor, of New Rochelle, N.Y., Louise passed away after a long illness on November 26, 2019, in Hanover N.H. Louise attended Northfield Mt. Hermon School and Smith College. She received her B.A. from the University of New Hampshire. She moved to Kamuela, Hawaii in 1957 and raised 4 children who will miss her dearly. Following her divorce in 1973, Louise moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she joined the Honolulu Symphony, (now the Hawaii Symphony) as a violinist and later became the symphony Union Representative. She also taught violin to people of all ages through the Punahou School music department. In 1980, Louise was married to Dr. Walter Griggs and moved to Hanover, N.H. She joined the Vermont Symphony as well as the Dartmouth Symphony and began teaching violin to children in the Hanover area. Louise and Walt spent many happy years dividing their time between Hanover and Isle la Motte, Vermont. Louise was known for her passion for music, cooking, tennis and bridge. Louise's children will greatly miss her warm advice in all culinary matters! We have many happy memories of summers spent on Isle la Motte, where Louise's love for this area and for her extended family which regularly gathered together in this beautiful spot, will never be forgotten. Louise is survived by her husband, Dr. Walter Griggs; her children: Meg (Steve) Lin of Honolulu, Hawaii, Hans Solmssen of Verbier, Switzerland, Lisa (Philip) Browning of Honolulu, Hawaii and Jennifer Solmssen (Glenise McKenzie), of Portland, Oregon; her four step-children: Tom (Anne) Griggs of Morgantown, West Virginia, Peter (Sydney) Griggs of Norwich, Vt., Kimo (Abby) Griggs of Seattle, and Kelly (Diane) Griggs, of Norwich, Vt.. Louise and Walt were the proud grandparents of 17 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Louise is also survived by her loving brother, David (Barbara) McGregor, of Forest Hills, N.Y. and their three daughters, Jane Gazdag, Rachel McGregor and Susan McGregor.
