Tsuruko Taba
Tsuruko TabaMarch 1,1916 - October 26, 2019 Tsuruko Taba, 103, died at home in Cupertino, California on October 26, 2019. Born on March 1, 1916, in Lahaina, Maui, the second of 14 children of Tensho and Nahe Taba. From the age of 3, she was raised in Okinawa, Japan, where she married classmate Seisho Yamauchi. While her husband did his required Japanese military service, she returned to Maui to help her parents on a sugar cane plantation near Lahaina, where her son Seikichi was born in 1934. After her husband died from illness in 1940, she settled permanently in Hawaii, moving from Maui to Honolulu where she worked as a seamstress for over 50 years, finally retiring from Villa Roma when in her eighties. After she raised her son as a single mother and put him through dental school, she traveled all over Asia, Europe, Australia, and the United States. She was active in the Salvation Army Japanese Liliha Corps and enjoyed gardening, ikebana, shamisen, and socializing in her ESL classes. She was very close to her siblings and extended family, who remember her as always having a positive attitude and a ready smile. In 2011 she moved to California to live with her son and be closer to her grandchildren. She is survived by sisters Kimiko Taba and Lurline Matsumoto; son Seikichi "Tom" Taba and his wife Miriam; grandchildren Brian Taba and Kimberly Taba DeRose (Nick); great-grandchildren Logan and Kaila DeRose; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand- nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Seisho Yamauchi; parents Tensho and Nabe Taba; brothers Tenshin, Victor, Clarence, Richard, Raymond, Toshio, and Masayoshi Taba; and sisters Kameyo Taba, Shizue Kiyabu, Yoshiko Taba, and Adele Onaga.
