A Godly Woman December 21, 1925-December 5, 2019 Carinthia Kauikeauoli Puaa Harbottle was born on December 21, 1925 in Honolulu. Her parents were Hiram and Annie Pua'a. Hiram was an engineer for HECO and a Kamehameha Schools alumni. Annie was a school teacher at Kalihi Kai. Her brother was Rhinehardt Pua'a. Their childhood home was nestled in Kalihi. "Sister", as she was known to her ohana was a Graduate of the University of Hawaii. She was an accomplished musician, vocalist, musical educator and arranger of very beautiful and progressive Hawaiian music for its day. Her ohana worshipped and prayed together, loved one another and the Bible frequently guided their daily lives. She was a member of Kawaiaha'o Church from her pre-teens and continued her involvement with Hawaii's Mother Church throughout her life in the areas of Christian Education, Ministry of Music, Christian Endeavor and the Kupuna Ministry. She unselfishly volunteered her time and served in numerous positions with both Kawaiaha'o and the Hawaii Conference United Church of Christ and was mentored in her spiritual life by many pastors. They include Kahu William Kamauu, Kahu Edward Kahale, Kahu Abraham Akaka, Kahu William Kaina, Kahu James Kimo Merseberg, Kahu David Kaupu, Kahu James Fung, Kahu Curt Kekuna, Kahu Kenneth Makuakane, Hope Kahu Tuck Wah Lee, Hoe Kahu Leopold Waiau, Hope Kahu Edward Kapo'o, Hope Kahu Dean Fujii, Hope Kahu Ron Ching, Hope Kahu James Halfaker and Lay Pastor Mealii Kalama. She was also a beloved Deacon of the Church and upon retirement from the Kawaiaha'o Church Diaconate was bestowed the title of Deacon Emeritus. A rare honor. Kawaiaha'o will miss "Aunty Sister" but confident that she is flying with the angels. In addition to her Church life, Carinthia Puaa Harbottle was an accomplished educator. She taught on Maui, in Japan and joined the faculty of the Kamehameha Schools Preparatory Department as a Kumu (teacher) from 1963-1986. Her first classes began in the fall of 1963, as a seventh grade teacher. In the 1966-67 school year, Mrs. Harbottle switched into teaching the sixth grade. In the 1967-68 school year, she became a music teacher, which would continue until her retirement. Together, Ms. Harbottle and Ms. Violet Rosehill made a formidable Hawaiian cultural teaching team. Every child that passed through the elementary school halls during this era learned every word of Pia-pa, Pupu Hinu Hinu, and Christmas carols in 'Olelo Hawaii, while learning the accompaniment on the ukulele and/or hula motions. As part of the strong musical tradition at Kamehameha during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, Ms. Carinthia Harbottle will forever live in the hearts and minds of multi generations of Kamehameha students that were once her pupils. Many of whom went on to become Hawaii's most talented musicians of Hawaii's musical renaissance. "Aunty Sister" was married to Isaac Harbottle, a retired Honolulu firefighter. She served as music arranger for Honolulu Fire Department Ensemble in the 1960's that toured the nation to promote Hawaii. She is survived by Grandpa Isaac Hakuole Harbottle, Jr's children, all predeceased and their decendants. They are Isaac Kepookalani Harbottle, 3 children,10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; Tiona Nadine Wailehua 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; Newton DeTray Harbottle (none); and Myron Kala-kaua Harbottle 3 children,15 grandchildren and all the Puaa Cousins throughout Hawaii. Carinthia Kauikeauoli Puaa Harbottle was called home to the Lord on December 5, 2019. Services will be held at her beloved Kawaiaha'o Church on Saturday, January 4, 2020.
