Ronald David Gould
Ronald David Gould, age 70, of Kailua, Hawaii passed away on January 4, 2020. Ron will be remembered as counselor, teacher, mentor, coach and friend by thousands of high school students encountered during his 45 years as an educator in Kansas and Hawaii. From his enlistment after college in the National Teacher Corps program throughout his work as a Punahou Dean, Ron's priority never changed; for him it was always and only about the "kids". While working in small, rural and low-income schools, Ron found himself coaching wrestling, football and track as part of his teaching job. He recognized the influence of the activities and often focused on sports as an avenue to connect with students who could not relate to a classroom setting. Building lasting connections between caring adults and students to enhance character education and emotional stability became his strength. Later, during his 33-year tenure at Punahou School, Ron used his gifts to help develop and implement innovative psycho-social programs such as peer helping - building a legacy that touched hundreds of Hawaii students during his term. Many of Ron's days following his retirement in 2018 included at least one chance encounter with a former student - on the beach, at the grocery store, in an office-where the student thanked Ron for changing his or her life during high school. Such was Ron's effect on his kids. Ron is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kim, and sons Prom (Sopharat), Mina and Gabe. Services will be private.
