FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

BYRON W. BENDER
BYRON W. BENDER90, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the University of Hawai'i, passed away on January 4, 2020 in Honolulu. Born August 14, 1929 in Pennsylvania, Byron received his PhD in Linguistics from Indiana University in 1963. He developed his academic interests in Oceanic languages while working as an Education Specialist in the Marshall Islands. He joined the faculty at the University of Hawai'i in 1964, where he served as Chair of Linguistics (1969-95) and President of the University of Hawai'i Professional Assembly (1983-88). His contributions continued beyond retirement as Editor of Oceanic Linguistics and as a member of the University of Hawai'i Board of Regents. Byron is survived by his wife, Lois; five children, Susan Bender, Sarah Fagan, Catherine Bender, Judith Bender, and John Bender; and four grandchildren, Emily Fagan, Thomas Fagan, Sophie Bender, and Charlotte Bender. Private services will be held. Donations may be made to the Alfred Capelle & Byron Bender Endowed Scholarship Fund (12391504) at the University of Hawai'i.
