Martina Domingo AcobaMartina was born in Victoria, Tarlac in the Philippines. She passed away at age 96, on January 20, 2020 in Honolulu. Her husband Simeon R. Acoba Sr. predeceased her in 1985 after 42 years of marriage. When Martina was five years old her father, Lorenzo Domingo settled the family in Mana, Kauai where he worked at the Kekaha Sugar Plantation. Her mother, Aguilina Sarmiento passed away when Martina was 10 years old and Martina's older sister Beatriz Domingo Agmata served as her guardian, enabling Martina to attend and graduate from Mid-Pacific Institute. In June 1943 she married Simeon Sr. at the Filipino Methodist Church, now the Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Martina was a sales associate and a preschool teacher before graduating from nursing school in 1959. She served as a nurse for 25 years at Queen's Hospital and Tripler Army Medical Center, retiring in 1984. She was a longtime active member of Aldersgate, opening her home for church meetings, teaching Sunday school and assisting in the church office. After retirement she also did volunteer work, participated in spiritual retreats and charitable events, and joined the Filipino Chamber of Commerce and the Hawai`i Filipino Women's Civic Club. A favorite event was the Club's annual Maria Clara ball where she wore a new terno gown every year. She had a multitude of interests, traveling through Europe and Asia, visiting grandchildren on the mainland, and creating floral arrangements. She was an avid gardener who tended to her plants throughout her life, especially her collection of orchids. She was happiest when she was with her family and friends.
