Mun Kyau Hew Au
HEW AU Mun Kyau (Munny) Hew Au, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 18. She was 95 years old. Munny was born on September 11, 1924 in Paia, Maui, the youngest of eight children. She married Harold Au in 1946. We are so grateful for her long life marked by loving devotion to family. Munny had great warmth and empathy and was known for her zingy comments. She had the ability to relate to anyone, and had many friends who shared her diverse areas of interest: reading, children, whale watching, art, and Chinese culture. Munny worked as a police dispatcher for 15 years. She volunteered as a docent for the Honolulu Academy of Arts and for the county advising on policies to help children and youth. Many Punahou children claimed her as their Popo after she visited their classrooms to explain Chinese New Year customs. In her later years, she enjoyed whale watching with her pod of enthusiasts at Lanai Lookout. Munny is survived by daughter Kathryn H. Au, son Randall Q. M. Au, daughter Susan Au (Kevin) Doyle, and granddaughters Alysn and Kaitlyn, and son Christopher K. H. (Leilani) Au, and grandsons Shade and Griffin. Private services were held. Donations in Munny's honor may be made to either the UH Manoa Children's Center (through the University of Hawaii Foundation) or the Honolulu Museum of Art.
