Janet Shizue Harada
Janet passed away peacefully in her home on February 12, 2020 at nearly 104 years old. She was born in Honolulu on April 11, 1916 to Hashi and Kuhachi Moriyama. She attended Kawananakoa Middle, Leilehua High, and the Cannon School of Business and worked at the Honolulu Gas Company before marrying Raymond Harada in February 1945 in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he was in the army as a Japanese language instructor at Camp Savage. Raymond served in the Military Intelligence Service and was the language aide to American generals and civil administrators in Tokyo and Okinawa. Janet acted unofficially as interpreter and goodwill ambassador among the wives of Japanese and American officials. Together they worked diligently to establish positive relations between both countries, and Raymond was recognized with the Legion of Merit, the highest non-combatant award bestowed by the US military. Their tours of duty took them back and forth to Japan, Baltimore, Maryland, and to San Francisco and Oakland. Janet was the ultimate hostess and cook, and their home was filled with countless gatherings of colleagues, family and friends. She was truly a most loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to all. Janet was a longtime, active member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was a past president of the Hawaii district United Methodist Women and was instrumental in nurturing leadership among the women. She volunteered at Kuakini Hospital for nearly 30 years and was always helping at her daughters' schools. She was an especially devoted fan of the Kaimuki Middle School music department. Janet was predeceased by Raymond after 61 years of marriage and her daughter, Raychelle Kondo. She is survived by son-in-law, Rodney Kondo, daughters Roberta Harada (Thomas Robertson), and Vickie Hayakawa (Robert). Janet has six grandchildren: Eric Kondo (Jean), Jessica Robertson (John Working), Megan Mariuz (John), Thomas Robertson (Leia), Matthew and Daniel Hayakawa. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Timothy and Janet Kondo, Grace and Jaclyn Working, and Lincoln and Lukas Robertson. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Navian Hawaii for their tremendous integrated care and hospice support, as well as to Tripler Army Medical Center for decades of excellent care and kindness. A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2020, at Wesley United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. with the service beginning at 6:00.
