She was a graduate of Maryknoll High School ('46) and studied sociology at the University of Hawai'i. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Russell Peter Merrifield, and is survived by her 3 children Mark (Janet), John (Pamela), Jane (Alex) Gitelman, and 5 grandchildren, Salvator, Sophia, Anna, Daniel, and Liza. Doris and Pete raised their family in Orange County, CA, where she spent the majority of her administrative career at UC Irvine and Orange Coast Community Colleges. She enjoyed books, music, and the arts, and spending time with family and friends. She is remembered for her intelligence, wit, and radiant spirit, and for her loving support to the many friends she made throughout her life.
