Dr. PAUL BIENFANG
Dr. Paul Bienfang, 72, a prominent member of Hawai'i's marine science community, passed away on June 17, 2020 in Honolulu. He was the son of Woodrow and Doris Bienfang of Ft. Atkinson, Wis. Paul graduated from the University of Hawai'i-Manoa (UHM) in 1971, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with Highest Honors, followed by a Masters, then PhD in 1977 at UHM in biological oceanography, carrying out cutting edge research on phytoplankton growth dynamics and microbial ecology. In 1975, Paul joined Oceanic Institute (OI) as Senior Scientist, then rose to co-CEO, with OI as a premier marine research organization for finfish & shrimp aquaculture. In 1997, Paul left OI for a shrimp aquaculture startup on Kaua'i, Ceatech USA. The farm, using farming technology developed at OI & now under new ownership, is one of the most productive for brood stock and the delectable "Kauai Shrimp." In 2002, Paul founded Analytical Services LLC, a small water quality and microbial laboratory. Paul rejoined UH-Manoa in 2004 as Associate Professor in the Oceanography Dept., where he headed ciguatera research, taught an upper level Living Marine Resources course, mentored graduate students and gave numerous technical presentations. Upon retirement, Paul became Emeritus Faculty of the Oceanography Dept. During his career, he also contributed to the community with his involvement in various professional associations, often serving on their Boards. Paul's joy and passion for sports as player, coach and mentor embraced baseball, volleyball, tennis, and golf. Cooking in the kitchen was also his laboratory, and his lilikoi cheesecake was perfection!
