Lionel Tsugio Sakaki
64, of Kuliouou, passed away peacefully August 28, 2020, after a short battle with cancer. He was known as Coach Lionel to hundreds of youth in Hawaii Kai Youth Baseball. An enduring and gifted coach, many learned, loved and continued playing baseball because of the fundamentals and start he gave them. Some are coaching their sons and daughters following his example. Lionel graduated from Kalani High School in 1974. Played football as a defensive back for the Falcons under Coach Tony Ah Yat. After graduation, he became a apprentice welder, then worked for Worldwide Distributors and then worked for SERVCO Pacific as a warehouseman. After 35 plus years, he recently retired. He loved fishing in Alaska. He loved taking mom to visit family on Kauai and Maui. Lionel loved hanging with his many "hanai" Kuliouou gang. Lionel is predeceased in death by father, John Sakaki. He is survived by mother, Nancy Sakaki, brothers Bruce (Janine) Sakaki, Les (Nancy) Sakaki of Kauai, sister, Ann Yonamine, nephews, Lucas Hassett, Mark Sakaki, Ethan Yonamine, one niece, Malia (Peter) Hanakahi, and grandniece Aiyanna "Blondie" and grandnephew Pax. A private scattering of ashes will be held. A celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
