NONA A. MINAMI
NONA A. MINAMINona A. Minami (née Armstrong), born in Scotland, passed away October 26, 2020 in Seattle, Wash. Nona and her family emigrated to the U.S. in 1930, settling in Barberton, Ohio. She graduated from Boston University in 1947 and relocated to Hawai'i to teach high school on Lana'i. There she met and married Kiyoshi "Mana" Minami. They subsequently moved to O'ahu, where they lived and worked in the DOE until their retirement in 1980. While teaching at Castle High School, Nona earned her Master's in Library Science at University of Hawai'i eventually becoming the school's head librarian. She retired as an Educational Specialist for the DOE. Upon retirement, the Minamis taught school in Japan, which they combined with world travels. Nona also served as a docent at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. When her husband passed away in 2005, Nona relocated to Henderson, Nev. In 2012, she then settled in Seattle, Wash., and became a resident of the Horizon House retirement community. Nona is survived by her children – Jeanne, Roger, and Christine – six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. A private family service at sea to scatter her ashes will be held at a future time when it is safe for all to travel.
