78, peacefully passed in Honolulu, HI on November 20, 2020 surrounded by his wife and family. Born on June 16, 1942 in Paia, Maui, "Chubby" or "Big V" was a Vietnam Veteran and served 42 years in the U.S. Army and the Hawaii Army National Guard. He retired from the Hawaiian Telephone Company, and later worked with Verizon Federal, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Wahiawa Chapter.
He will be remembered for his warm, loving nature and unstoppable laugh.
He is survived by his wife Carlene Vares; four daughters, Annette Tanner, Suzanne Vares-Lum, Cherie Vares, and Jamie Lei Chinen; seven Grandchildren, Brandon, Shane, Max, Diana, Connie, Hiroko, Conner; and Great-Grandchild Max Jr.
Celebration of Life arranged by Borthwick Mortuary on December 22.
