Irene Sumie Shibuya
101, passed away peacefully on November 25th at Maunalani Nursing and Rehab Ctr due to natural causes. Irene was born on June 23, 1919 in Honolulu to Eisuke and Tsune Matsumoto, the 5th of 6 children. She attended McKinley High School and later met her love of her life, Sam Shibuya. They married on November 28, 1941 at St. Mary's Church and raised 3 children, Steven (Faith) Shibuya, Susan (Fumio) Omura, and Randall (Joanie) Shibuya. She was a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who always helped with baby sitting the grandkids, cooking great meals during the holidays, sewing wonderful costumes on Halloween, and always being there to lend a helping hand. She had worked part-time at Liberty House where her love for fashionable clothes were her trademark. Even in her 90's she was still active, going to Curves, walking Ala Moana, and traveling.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sam, brothers Clarence and Ike, sisters Clara Lemanski and Peggy Zane. She is survived by her older sister, Gloria Chang, her 3 children, 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The family expresses its warm gratitude to the staff of Maunalani Nursing and Rehab Center for their great care of Irene and undaunting dedication for the frail and elderly.
Private services will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at a future date. In lieu of flowers or koden, please extend your aloha to someone in need during these unprecedented times.
