Joe Sadao Matsukawa
Our beloved dad, Joe Sadao Matsukawa of Aiea, passed away November 18, 2020 at the age of 89. At Waimea High School, he was a celebrated three-sport athlete. He took his skills to UH-Manoa in 1949, where he was the starting quarterback for three years and played in the Hula Bowl. He remained a loyal supporter of UH football and made it back to Aloha Stadium as a cardboard cut-out this season. He served in the Army and then Army Reserve. In his long professional career in the Department of Education, he was a teacher, coach (of Leilehua High's only baseball state championship) and state administrator. In the community, he was a Neighborhood Watch captain, election campaign volunteer, ballroom dancer, and avid golfer. As a husband, father and grandfather, he was supportive, patient, and kind. He is predeceased by wife Florence and survived by his daughters Lori (Larry Blackstock) and Liane (Bruce) and grandchildren Alex, Lindsay, Haley, Erin, and Michael. The family thanks Nayda Gamiao and her staff for their compassionate care. Private services will be held at a later time. No offerings (koden).
