It is with great sadness we announce Michael (Mike) Matsuura, 85, of Honolulu, passed away unexpectedly on December 21, 2020. He was born in Wahiawa to Akiyoshi and Shizue Matsuura. Mike was a hard worker spending his summers laboring on his uncle's Kahuku fruit and vegetable farm and helping at his grandmother's family laundry business in Wahiawa. After graduating from Kaimuki High School and University of Hawaii, Mike's commitment to St. Francis and the healthcare community spanned 39 years. He started as chief accountant and became the first layman in St. Francis's 50-year history to hold a post formerly reserved for Franciscan sisters by being appointed administrator for St. Francis Hospital (Liliha). He subsequently served as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice-President for St. Francis Healthcare Systems. Mike was dedicated towards helping the Sisters of St. Francis and found fulfillment in supporting their missions. He earned the distinguished designation of Fellow for the American College of Healthcare Executives, and served as Director and President of the Hospital Financial Management Association, and President of the Hospital Association of Hawaii. He also shared his knowledge as an instructor on hospital business management at the University of Hawaii.
Michael married his high school sweetheart Elaine and celebrated 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife Elaine, sisters Helen Fujita (Joe) and Amy Gibo (Chris), sons George (Ann) and Gregg (Charmaine) and daughter, Michelle Dunn (Edward). He was blessed by four grandchildren Matthew, Zachary, Sarah and Siena. Mike enjoyed boat fishing and golfing (at Moanalua). He had a passion for working with his hands and was skilled at carpentry doing his own home improvements and boat repairs. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, and cherished being together on family trips. He will truly be missed.
