Dr. Barry Michael Brennan
Dr. Barry Michael Brennan, born on April 20, 1944, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2021. Barry came to Hawaii in 1967 after graduating from Arizona State University and spent the next 50 years at the University of Hawaii. He studied in the Department of Entomology (now the Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences) receiving his MS in 1969 and Ph.D. in 1975. Barry later served as Chair of the Department of Environmental Biochemistry and as Associate Dean of the University of Hawai'i's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). He was instrumental in increasing awareness and expanding education on pesticide safety in both Hawai'i and nationally. He preserved the history of the college as co-author of Hawai'i's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources: Celebrating the First One Hundred Years, and received CTAHR's Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2019. He served in the Army for 20 years, including in Thailand from 1970 to 1972, where several lifelong friendships were forged. Barry will be remembered most for his kindness, patience, sense of humor, philosophical conversations and quiet demeanor. He was always deeply grateful for the love shared by family and friends. Barry is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter Kathleen; son Brian (Aileen); grandsons Kainoa and Kenji; brothers Pat (Mary Anne) and Mike (Cindy); and sisters Sheila Titus (Steve) and Bonnie Puckett.
Memorial Services will be held at a later date at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
