Henry Soon Tai Kim
Henry Soon Tai Kim passed away peacefully February 15, 2021 at the age of 94 at his home in Kaimuki, Oahu. He was born March 23, 1926 in Honolulu, Hawaii to the late Man Soo Kim and late Wal Sun Lee. Henry was a Korean War veteran, a Pearl Harbor security guard, a Honolulu Board of Water Supply pipefitter, and a retired Captain in the Honolulu Fire Department. Captain Kim was the first certified Fire Investigator for the Honolulu Fire Department when the Department established the Fire Investigation Section in 1974 and served as the Department's Chief Fire Arson Investigator for many years. He attended the FBI Academy and trained with fire investigators in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Fire Departments. By the time he retired in 1986, Captain Kim had established a baseline for investigations in the Department and developed good working relationships with the detectives in the Honolulu Police Department. Henry was a Sergeant in the United States Army in the Korean War and an amateur boxer in Honolulu. He was a graduate and a staunch supporter of St Louis School and an avid fan of the University of Hawaii athletic programs. Henry enjoyed annual trips to Las Vegas, loved playing cards with family & friends and was known for always helping others. As a devout Catholic, he attended weekly church services at Saint Peter & Paul Church in Honolulu. Henry will be forever lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 70 years, Alice Yu Kim, and his children, Brian (Brenda), Duane (Miyo), Lowell, and Galen (Angel), 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Henry will also be fondly remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lydia Kim and Katherine Minn. A Celebration of Life will be held in honor and memory of Henry later at Oahu Mortuary in Honolulu.
