Fred passed away after a life well lived, on February 11, 2021, due to Alzheimer's, at a Veterans Affairs care facility in Temple, Texas.
Fred was born in Honolulu, Hawai'i, on October 2, 1944, to Dr. John and Dorothy Devereux. Growing up in Manoa, he was six when he started playing baseball in the Manoa Little League, coached by the legendary "Father of Manoa Baseball", David "Pop" Eldredge. Through elementary and during high school, pitcher Fred and Pop's son, catcher "Pal" Eldredge, made a formidable team. A 1962 Punahou graduate, Fred had a three year 32-4 pitching record, was a two time ILH all-star and was on the Hawai'i prep all-star team that toured Japan in 1961. At Michigan State, during his junior year he pitched in 17 games as a relief pitcher to tie the MSU record held by Robin Roberts, and had a 1.43 ERA. Fred also loved coaching Little League for many years.
After his U.S. Army service in Vietnam, Fred returned to Honolulu and his job at Unocal. He became Hawai'i district manager and was later transferred to Portland, Oregon to manage bulk sales for 13 western states. He then joined Brenntag Pacific before retiring in Austin, Texas with Kay, his loving wife of 29 years. They enjoyed golf and traveling together.
Fred is survived by Kay; was blessed with sons by his first wife, Beth Barry of O'ahu, Tom (Melanie) of Maui and Ryan (Gwen) of Washington; four grandchildren; stepchildren Jeff (Beth) and Terri (Jim); brother John, Jr. (Lee) of California.; sister Diane (Bob) Ackerson of O'ahu, and three nieces. Preceded in death by brother Marvin (Bill Prange) of Missouri.
Fred was active in community, civic, and religious organizations, and was a past president of the Punahou Alumni Association. Fred's humble and gentle spirit, sharp mind, sense of humor and laid-back style will be deeply missed.
