The beginning of World War II meant moving to a new house behind the Tanaka Store in Kahuku where she met her husband Yoshio, and married him in 1943. Starting in Kaaawa, the young family relocated several times in Wahiawa and Honolulu and ended up at St. Louis Heights with six children to raise. Soon grandchildren appeared and kept Grandma Kawana busy and happy. She continued to help care for her grandchildren into her 90's and was happiest when she was busy.
Matsuko was preceded in death by husband Yoshio, brothers Clarence, Fumio, and Hachiro and sisters Chiyoko Kamei, Teruko Nishimura, Akino Okinaga, and Mitsue Yoshimura. She is survived by sons Richard (Kathryn), Sanford (Linda), Clifford (Diane), Glenn (Sandi), Timothy (Josette) and daughter Karen Rabe. Her grandchildren are James, Elizabeth, Lauren, Sabrina, Melissa, Jessica, Kekai, and Sydney Kawana, Kanoe Mullins; Sean, Liana, and Leia Rabe, Christy Tiqui; and hanai granddaughter Tina Arakawa. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, 1 great-greatgrandchild, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
