Yukie SakaiYukie (Tao) Sakai, age 95, passed away on March 18, 2021 in Honolulu. She is survived by daughter Eileen; son Leslie (Lori); and granddaughters Teresa and Melanie (Adam). Yukie was preceded in death by her husband Ronald in 2015.

Born on March 29, 1925 in Pahoa, Hawai'i, Yukie was the eldest daughter of 8. At age 14 she left school to support her family, ultimately earning a diploma from Mitzi's School of Tailoring and Design.

In 1950 she married Ronald Tsugio Sakai. One New Year's Eve when they were apart, they both looked at the moon to erase the distance between them. Ronald, Yukie, & brother-in-law Uichi owned and operated Kapalama Plumbing and Sheet Metal Shop.

Yukie and Ronald loved to travel around the world together. For their 60th wedding anniversary, they even embarked on a cruise to Alaska with the entire family. In 2007 she received the Mayor's Senior Recognition Award for her many volunteer years assisting elderly and homebound community members.

Those who knew and loved Yukie describe her as always smiling, willing to help, and, of course, looking forward to Happy Hour. We are honored to have had her in our lives, and she will be greatly missed.

A private Celebration of Life will be held followed by an inurnment at Punchbowl.
