FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Preston Mitsugi Ota
Preston Mitsugi OtaAge 69, passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2021, following complications after a long illness. He was born in Honolulu and was a devoted husband, committed father and caring friend. After a short stint with the U.S. Army, he dedicated his life serving proudly with the Honolulu Police Department for 15 years where he retired as a Sergeant but not before receiving the department's highest award in 1974, the Gold Medal of Valor in a hostage situation during a police standoff with an armed suspect. Preston was the primary instrument that entered the residence and negotiated the terms of surrender of the armed suspect who had barricaded himself. He loved music and immersed himself in leading edge computer technology and solutions. His gentle demeanor and caring heart will be missed. The family thanks the staff at Kuakini Medical Center as well as those that helped to remember their cool uncle, peaceful brother, and caring friend.

Preston is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Diane Sumida Ota and son, Christopher Ken Ota; Sisters Kimberly (Robert) Smith and Georgette (Marco) Meyer; 2 nieces and 3 nephews; and 2 grandnieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Erma Ota; and sister, Lauren Ota Sierra.
