Born January 11, 1935 at Mill Camp, Waianae to Uto and Kame Katekaru, immigrants of Okinawa. Herbert served our country honorably as a veteran of the Korean War and then devoted his career to helping others as outreach counselor of Kalani High School. He saved hundreds of at-risk students with his ability to help them realize their full potential and redirect their energies towards graduation or vocational learning. Survived by wife Deanna, daughter Cheryl and grandsons Evan and Colton. He is also survived by sisters Yoshie Asato and Kay Shimabukuro. Preceeded in death by brothers Masato and Luke Katekaru. Papa lived a wonderful, glorious life, with few regrets and one filled full of love, laughter and family. Celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Hosoi Garden and Mortuary.
