FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Herbert Masami Katekaru
Herbert Masami KatekaruYou may not have had the opportunity to know Herbert Masami Katekaru but for those that knew him, not one single soul, would want for comfort or beg for kindness. Affectionately known to his closest as Kate, Papa passed peacefully at home surrounded by family in presence and many in spirit. Even as cancer ravaged his body, he wanted to live and fight as long and hard as he could. He wanted to see his grandsons blossom into men and reach their dreams and desires. The hard fought battle ended on July 13, 2021, after he woke up and said, "ok" and made the journey home to peace and tranquility.

Born January 11, 1935 at Mill Camp, Waianae to Uto and Kame Katekaru, immigrants of Okinawa. Herbert served our country honorably as a veteran of the Korean War and then devoted his career to helping others as outreach counselor of Kalani High School. He saved hundreds of at-risk students with his ability to help them realize their full potential and redirect their energies towards graduation or vocational learning. Survived by wife Deanna, daughter Cheryl and grandsons Evan and Colton. He is also survived by sisters Yoshie Asato and Kay Shimabukuro. Preceeded in death by brothers Masato and Luke Katekaru. Papa lived a wonderful, glorious life, with few regrets and one filled full of love, laughter and family. Celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Hosoi Garden and Mortuary. Visitation with family will be at 5pm, service at 6pm with limited seats. Live stream of the service is available by emailing the family at katekaruservice2021@gmail.com for the link to view. Papa had but one request to all; please celebrate and not mourn his journey home.
